"Angel of Australia", Mirusia performs at CapellaBay!
16/11/2021
On Thursday 11 November, CapellaBay residents and staff were delighted to have the very talented Mirusia perform at their home. Mirusia, known as the “Angel of Australia”, is an Australian Soprano who grew up in the Redlands area, where she still resides today.
At the age of 21, Mirusia was announced as the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious Dame Joan Sutherland Opera Award. It was the world renowned violinist Andre Rieu who gave her the name “Angel of Australia” when she toured the world with him for over 10 years.
Mirusia has been supporting the local Redlands community for over 10 years, giving back her time and beautiful voice to raise money for the Australian Children’s Music Foundation, Redland Foundation and Mater Children’s Hospital.
Her passion for giving back to her community stems from her childhood when her mother, who worked in aged care, would often ask Mirusia to sing for the residents. Mirusia quickly noticed the positive effect that music had on the aged. Now contributing her valuable time as a volunteer for Silver Memories, a specialised nostalgic music service providing music therapy for older Australians, Mirusia visits aged care homes whenever she is back in Australia.
CapellaBay residents enjoyed dressing up for Mirusia’s recent visit and all were very grateful to have had the opportunity to hear her sing and meet her in person. As it was also Remembrance Day, Mirusia joined in with residents to pay their respects to Australia’s fallen soldiers by assisting resident Buck to lay the wreath before her performance – which was described as “unforgettable”.
