Seeing double at The Terraces

18/09/2020

Meet Esma and Wilma, twin sisters that live at our Varsity Lakes home, The Terraces.

Esma and Wilma grew up in Victoria. In their early life, they were both Service Radio Operators intercepting Japanese signals. After the war Esma worked as a sales woman and Wilma worked in government positions.

One after the other, they moved to the Gold Coast with their husbands, settling down to have families of their own, with 8 children and 13 grandchildren between them. As day-to-day living at home became more difficult they decided to make The Terraces their new home last year. Wilma’s husband Keith came too but passed away shortly after.

They are very doting and caring for each other and you will rarely see them apart. They share many similar interests, including basketball and tennis. While Esma loves bowls, Wilma jokes it would bore her to death. One afternoon they came and observed a game of bowls, even though it’s not Wilma’s cup of tea, she was more than happy to encourage and support Esma.

Since moving into The Terraces, the sisters enjoy bus outings, happy hour, concerts and card games. They especially love our Afternoon TV Drama Series, Downton Abbey and A Place to Call Home, Esme stating she “wouldn’t miss it for the world”.

When coming into care we help residents find like-minded people to connect with and form new friendships, but how special to have your twin sister by your side for this next stage of your life.
